Wonder and Rationality
In Holocosmism, wonder is not opposed to reason. It is a higher form of attention that allows thought to remain open without collapsing into superstition or reductionism.
Wonder begins where ordinary categorization stops. It is the moment in which the world is no longer treated as a set of objects to classify, but as a presence to receive.
Two distortions
Holocosmism rejects two common distortions of experience:
- Reductionism: the claim that if something can be explained physically, then the experience itself is nothing more than the explanation.
- Capture: the tendency to turn a real feeling of connection into a belief system, slogan, or commercial doctrine.
Negative capability
A key concept here is negative capability: the capacity to remain in uncertainty without forcing premature closure.
This means holding science and experience together without making either one pretend to be the whole truth.
Wonder as competence
Wonder is not mere astonishment. It can be practiced, refined, and deepened.
It involves:
- attention rather than narrowing,
- presence rather than haste,
- openness rather than false certainty.
